What is survival? Survival isn't a competition with nature or other people, but a cooperative effort with the environment around you. Pioneers, Trappers & Mountain men, Native Americans and Trappers all survived by cooperating with the environment and each other. While there are no set rules, survival is all about knowledge, creativity, and the ability to improvise in the most difficult circumstances.

Basic survival skills

Preparing a plan for basic survival skills is the best thing to do if you are ever in a difficult situation. Even though a basic knowledge of first assistance is necessary, it's not enough. Basic survival skills include being able to cook without a cooking stove, how dehydrated can be treated, how best to fish for food, and how not to heat or cool yourself. It is important to practice these skills before you need them.

Equipment

A compass and other essential items for survival are among the most important. The compass is lightweight and portable. It is important to learn how to use a compass, and many local hiking/mountaineering organizations offer orienteering classes. You should ensure that you have all the essential equipment for any survival situation.

Food

To start with, you can always salvage animal skin. They can be as nutritious and useful as lean beef, and are even better for shoemaking or warmth. Broth can also be made from bones. You can extract the marrow from large bones and use it as a nutritional supplement. You should avoid over-cooking and salting bones. You can soak smaller bones and make flour out of them. Vitamin C is also very important for your health, but it is often lost from food during over-cooking, salting, and oxidation.

Shelter

The first step in building a survival shelter is to scout the area for moisture. Look for muddy patches and indents in the ground. You will be warmer if you have a dry place where to sleep. It is best to build your shelter higher than the ground if you can. It's hard to stay warm when you're surrounded with water. You should not build a survival shelter that is too close to the water in order to avoid drowning.

First aid

In a survival situation, knowing basic first aid is an absolute must. It can mean the difference between life and death. In such a situation, you may not have access to medical help, so learning basic first aid skills can increase your chances of survival. You can download apps for health to your smartphone and have them on hand. You'll be glad you did! Any outdoor adventurer should have basic first aid skills. Here are some important things to remember.

How to preserve food for survival

To preserve food in an emergency situation, drying is the best option. Drying food helps preserve them for longer. It also reduces the possibility of bacteria growth.

Dried fruits can be used as snacks in emergencies and don't require cooking. You can take them with you and eat as many as you wish without worrying about weight gain.

Although you can dry fruits at home with a dehydrator or oven, a solar oven is a better option. You could use a solar oven to dry all sorts of foods, including meat, fish, vegetables, and grains.

If you do decide to add preservatives, try adding salt first. Salt prevents mold growth. Follow this step with vinegar. Vinegar kills off harmful bacteria and stops mold from growing.

You will need to first cut your food into small pieces. You can use a knife or scissors. Pack everything carefully so there is no air in the container

Next, place the food inside a plastic bag. Cover the bag with plastic and let it dry somewhere warm.

Once the food has dried, you can place it in a sealed bag. Be careful not to let anything touch the food.
